People who never saw football before the prem will find it hard to believe most games were not televised. What's the best goal you've only ever seen the one time ?.I've got two that spring to mind,

1.Ray Stewart at home to Tottenham, NYD 82 or 83,a volley from outside the box,South Bank end,hit Clemences arm and shot into the roof of the net.

2,Mark Ward free kick at Oxford 85/86 season.

I was at Oxford that day. We were involved in a pretty serious crush outside cos the silly cunts only opened one turnstile. Yeah ward scored a screamer. Cottee got the other. Was only my 2nd WHU match

By the way I’m only 48!

Was the Ray Stewart volley from the touchline more or less ? I was there and haven't seen it since I was in the north bank right in line with it

For just once I was in the right stand and at the right end (West Upper) and it was a rocket of a goal!

I read the first two lines of the post and immediately thought of the same Ray Stewart goal. I was in the North Bank - opposite end of the ground - and it was still an absolutely stunning goal.

Graham Paddon scored an absolute scorcher at Molineux back in the day , must have been about 75/76

4-1 wasn’t it? And it was a decent Tottenham line up….

I think 1981, Trevor Brooking, scored two absolute curling beauties against Chelsea, one with either foot (at Upton Park).

Valentines Day massacre, 4 - 0 to us.

Re: One for us 50/60 year olds
Always remember McAvvennie's peach of a finish in the 4.0 at Chelsea from Cottee's sliced "assist". Talking of games on TV, that's the real shame of that season for me. The TV strike meant that most of West Ham's goals in the first few months don't exist on film. By the time the Club started their season DVD I think Frank had already scored 15 odd!

Re: One for us 50/60 year olds
Is this purely for old cunts, or can 47 year olds join in?

Almost certainly been seen since, but from and era where all football and goals weren't at the touch of a button, a midweek goal against Sunderland (I think) always stood out.

Think we won 5-0 and a simple parkes kick, onto dolans bonce and slayer volley without the ball hitting the floor the entire length of the pitch.

Sublime and I've seen it on the years dvd, but never with a TV company thinking it worthy.

Martin Allens winner in the league cup v wimbledon 1989.

Made us the nights giant killers.

Legend has it had itv were banned from showing the highlights because the game was so violent.

Dicks an early red.

Justin Fashanu was playing for us. Brother John for them. Devonshire on one leg was the classiest player on the park by a mile.

One of my favourite nights at UP.

Sir Trevor of Brooking scored 2 absolute pearlers against Chelsea on the Saint Valentines day massacre in 1981. One of them a sublime chip at the North Bank end their keeper Borota actually applauded. Not sure if any highlights were shown for this game.

Re: One for us 50/60 year olds
It was a season we was struggling (84?) up against a resolute Brighton team and Alan Dickens in the last 10 minutes from what seemed just inside the half way line curled a beautiful long range shot that just looked in from the moment it left his boot into the top corner…..I must admit I did think we’d found our Trev replacement from then on…….only about 10,000 attended…… :-(

Re: One for us 50/60 year olds
Trevor Brooking hit one in from about 35 yards out against Villa in the autumn of 1981 at their place. We lost 3-2, our first defeat of the season. It was an absolute pearler if my memory serves me well.

Martin Allen's league Cup goal against the dirty dons was superb.
I was stood on the northbank and every corner the coins were raining in at there players with Eric Young being one of the main targets.
My voice had totally gone the next day
One of the great Upton park nights.

Sven, I was gonna say the same Mad Dog goal v Wimbledon. League cup wasn't it? I was in the Westsude lower. We were losing and had a player sent off, Dicks? That was the equaliser and the place went crazy. We went on to win and then we stayed after for the Bond Scheme protests if my memory serves me right?
